The originator of the Dances of Universal Peace was Murshid Samuel Lewis. A life-long seeker, he studied and mastered many spiritual paths, and was the first American-born Sufi master. Committed to world peace through exchanges in the arts and agriculture, he was a ‘‘citizen diplomat’’ long before the phrase was invented. ‘‘Eat, Dance and Pray Together’’ was his peace plan. In his writings and teaching talks, he especially credits two of his teachers, Hazrat Inayat Khan and Ruth St. Denis, for their influence on him as the Dances began to ‘‘come to and through’’ him.

Rhythm Patterns to Accompany the Dances of Universal Peace for Guitar and Other Instruments

Using 13 well-known Dances of Universal Peace, Anáhatá’s clear instructions guide the student through different rhythmic patterns of guitar strumming which can be used for each Dance, or portions of each Dance. The rhythms are notated in the booklet for visual learning and the guitar playing on the CD is crystal clear and easy to follow. The rhythms can be adapted for playing with two hands for drummers. The performance, in Berlin in 1999, was organized by the local Dance community and drew more than 600 people. Most of the first 20 minutes of the oratorio is included in the video along with selected footage of the remainder. Excerpts of a short address by Neil (in German) precede the performance.
